Dear viewers, we are done with the first three months of 2012 and heading towards summer. We have many films released during these 3 months some are hits and blockbusters, while others are flops and some dint go well with the box-office but went good with the audiences who watched them. Let us now go with the quarterly report of the movies released so far in 2012.

[January- 7 releases]

Vijay, Ileana, Jeeva and Srikanth starrer Nanban is the first film released in 2012 during Pongal on January 12th, which was released in about 600+ theaters for the first two days and beaten Rajini’s Enthiran’s opening day collections in many centers. Ace director Shankar has once again proved that he is the undisputed king of box-office in South India collecting about Rs.50+crores in the first week itself. Following this Lingusamy directed Vettai was released with a gap of two days on 14th January. This is also a multi starrer film that casts Madhavan, Arya, Sameera Reddy and Amala Paul in the lead roles, which recorded a hit in the box-office collecting Rs.15crores per four days and also got 30% entertainment tax exemption from the Tamil Nadu Government along with Nanban.

Kollaikaran, Medhai, Paari, Settaithanam, Theni Maavattam are the other films released in Kollywood during the first month of 2012 that couldn’t make any impact at the box office.

[February- 14 releases]

Pandiraj directed Marina one of the small budgeting meaningful films canned on the seashore of Marina beach with small stars Siva Karthikeyan and Oviya, but recorded a hit within no time of release. Subsequently two of Amala Paul starrer romantic films released for Valentines weekend Siddharth starrer Kadhalil Sodhapuvadu Yeppadi [KSY] and Adharvaa’s Muppozhudhum Un Karpanaigal [MUK], which has opened well being romantic films, while KSY went good in the multiplexes, MUK grossed small screen viewers ultimately KSY recorded a hit with the box office.

The best supporting actor turn director Prakash Raj’s first directorial Dhoni was the other noted film released during the first weekend along with Marina, but didn’t go well with the audiences. Ambuli 3D, the first Tmail3D film released with descent openings but couldn’t stand longer in the stream with earlier releases. Sengathu Bhoomiyile, Oru Mazhai Naangu Saaral, Oru Nadigaiyin Vaakkumoolam, Soozhnilai, Vachaathi, Vilayada Vaa, Udumban, Kathal Paathai and Virudhanagar Sandhippu are the small films that do not made their presence felt by the audiences.

[March- 20 releases]

Starting with the Vasanthabalan directed period flick Aravaan with Aadhi and Dhansika in the leads March has a total of 20 films released during this month. Out of which the digital release of Sivaji Ganesan’s epic film Karnan is going well with the box office in small and big screens of all the centers. Sathyasiva directed Kazhugu is the only film released with limited screens, but picked up well increasing the screens and audiences gradually, even when getting mixed reviews from the audiences. Last but not least Dhanush starrer much hyped movie 3 directed by Rajini’s eldest daughter debutant Aishwarya Dhanush with Shruthi Hassan as the lead lady, was released on March 30th. 3 got good openings due to the hype made by chartbuster ‘Why this kolaveri di..’, but the movie didn’t do well with the b and c centers, moreover collections started fawning after one week of its release.

Behind these Kondaan Koduthaan, Shankar Oor Rajapalayam, Naanga, Pathirama Pathukkunga, Sevarkodi, Maasi, Vinmeengal, Aayiram Muthangaludam Thenmozhi, Kadhal Pisase, Kandha, Nandha Nandhitha, Meeravudan Krishna, Mudhalvar Mahatma, Othakkuthirai, Otha Veedu and Suriya Nagaram are the other films released during the third month of 2012 which could not collide with the concurrent releases and recorded flops in the box office.

Out of the 41 films released during the first quarterly of 2012 only 5 movies Nanban, Vettai, Marina, KSY and Karnan recorded hits in the box office. While Ambuli 3D, MUK, Aravaan and Kazhugu were moderate hits. Coming to the summer releases we have producer turn director Udhayanidhi’s Oru Kal Oru Kannadi, Karthi’s Saguni, Ajith’s Billa 2, Suriya’s Maatran. Let us wait and see which biggie will set the new trends in the box office.
